What is a PTC Heating Element?
A PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heating element is a type of electric heating component that exhibits a unique characteristic in terms of its electrical resistance with respect to temperature. Unlike traditional heating elements, PTC heating elements have a resistance that increases as their temperature rises.
Here’s how a PTC heating element works:
- Resistance Increase: At lower temperatures, PTC heating elements have a relatively low resistance, allowing electric current to pass through them easily. This initial phase of heating is often referred to as the “cold” state.
- Self-Regulating: As the PTC element begins to heat up, its resistance increases rapidly. This property is known as “self-regulation” because it limits the amount of current passing through the element as it heats. This, in turn, prevents the element from overheating.
- Temperature Stabilization: PTC heating elements are designed to stabilize at a specific temperature, often referred to as the “Curie temperature” or switching temperature. Once this temperature is reached, the element’s resistance sharply increases, reducing the current flow and preventing further heating.
- Efficient and Safe: PTC heating elements are known for their energy efficiency and safety features. They can provide consistent and controlled heating without requiring external temperature controls or thermostats.
These elements are commonly used in various applications, including heating devices, air heaters, water heaters, and automotive heating systems, where self-regulation and safety are essential.

PTC HEATING ELEMENTS (RECTANGLE TYPE)
All models listed in the specifications table below can be portioned into smaller sizes (MIN= 2.5×2.5mm). The resistance of segmented PTC thermistors or PTC chips will increase in proportion with its size.
For example:
1. A PTC chip of 1000Ω, segmented into 1/2, its resistance will become 2000Ω per segment (1000Ω x 2segments = 2000Ω)
2. A PTC chip of 20Ω, segmented into 1/4, its resistance will become 80Ω per segment (20Ω x 4segments = 80Ω)

PTC HEATING ELEMENTS (DISK TYPE)
For low-volume round PTC thermistors with unique dimensions, please also consider using rectangular-type PTC thermistors with slightly higher temperatures for faster delivery and lower MOQ.
For example:
1. A round PTC chip of 8.5mm can be replaced with a square PTC chip with 6x6mm (8.5 x 0.707=6.01mm)
2. A round PTC chip of 12.5mm can be replaced with a square PTC chip with 8.5×8.5mm (12.5 x 0.707=8.84mm)
